SUSTAINABLE
HOUSING
Sustainable housing is the creation of
energy-efficient and healthy homes, with a goal of
respect and reducing harm toward the environment. The
term "sustainable" applies to humans and the environment.
We want to sustain a clean and healthy environment, plus
live in a home that is sustainable economically – in
other words, efficient and comfortable. It is in this way
that sustainable housing ties directly to ecological
housing.
There are many sustainable housing
designs available and these designs can range from
passive solar housing to zero energy housing or simply
incorporating sustainable housing materials into your
house design. Some of these sustainable housing projects
include materials such as heat storage tubes for passive
solar collection, propane gas refrigerator, waterless
composting toilets, grey water recycling parts, storm
water drainage drywells, and sun screen fabric, to
mention a few.
Sustainable housing projects are designed
to be ecological and economical by putting into effect
passive designs with natural air conditioning, energy
management, water conservation, and waste
management.
Sustainable urban housing can also be
made to be very cost effective by integrating several
different features into the house, such as photovoltaic
cells powering the lights, solar hot water systems and
clever water conservation systems – which will all save
you money. There are many companies out there that focus
solely on sustainable home building. They build their
homes to not only to be cost-effective but also provide a
healthy living environment for families and for the
land and resources around these homes.
